Nothing gives a guy a warm fuzzy feeling than knowing that your home is protected by a whole house water filter. I took it one further and added a secondary filter beneath the sink that provides water to a drinking spigot and the ice maker in my fridge.
All is good unless you forget to change them. Yup, I just purchased a new to me home, and there in black on white was a date that sent shivers through me. That date was 4 years ago. NO, IT COULDN’T BE! Nobody would leave a filter in that long. Turns out the old man passed away and installing a whole house water filter was likely one of his dying acts.
Once I unscrewed it, there was no doubt that the darn thing was ancient, black, and rotten looking, but not dissolved, thank goodness. Mine is after the softener so I had to turn off the water to the home before I changed it. I also shut the water to the rest of the home so I did not have it backflushing at me.
Once lubed the O-ring and got it back together I got this funny dirty feeling if you know what I mean. It soon abated and I was back in business.
The moral of the story is that if you are going to add filters to your home, be sure to calendar their timely replacement.
